"All this week, we will be highlighting a local fire department in Lancaster County. The Manheim Township agency is nearly 100% volunteer. Three stations - Neffsville, Eden, and Southern Manheim - along with Manheim Township Fire Rescue make up the busiest volunteer department in the county.
Fire Chief Rick Kane says combined, they run about 2700-2800 calls per year. "We still have municipalities in Lancaster County that are running 100 or 200 calls a year. In comparison to our 2700 or so, that makes us extremely busy."
Two of the three stations have live-ins, meaning firefighters that live at the station. Neffsville does not, but they still have a roster of about 50 firefighters that can show up at a call. And those calls can vary. Firefighters like Josh Hummel have seen it all. "You can run everything from a vehicle accident on the highway, to the next thing is a tree on wires or on top of a house, and then you can go to a water rescue."
