With the holidays right around the corner, we thought we would help those searching for the right gift for that special someone, a gift everyone needs.

Did you know smoke detectors only last 8 to 10 years? Like most things, the sensors in the smoke detectors do eventually wear out and may not operate properly in the event of a fire. The 'self-test' button tests the circuitry and battery of the detector, but may not test the actual sensor.

The U.S. Fire Administration recommends replacing smoke detectors that are more than 8 or 10 years old.

For more information on Smoke Detectors, see US Fire Administration Smoke Alarm Fact Sheet"

If the person on your list has an oil furnace or natural gas appliances, a carbon monoxide alarm is also a great gift idea! According to the Journal of the American Medical Association, carbon monoxide is the leading cause of accidental poisoning deaths in America.

For more information about Carbon Monoxide, see First Alert's Carbon Monoxide Fact Sheet

Have a safe holiday season!
