On Thursday afternoon, Engine 24-1 headed for the LCPSTC for some training and intuitive thinking. The objective was to evaluate some stand-pipe pack configurations and deployment.
The engine crew wanted to primarily test two configurations. These were the Denver Pack and the "Bundles". Both are set-up for bagless carries. In addition both packs can be slung over an SCBA and are essentially hands-free carries. This allows the firefighter to carry additional tools and equipment.
The denver pack consists of three 50' sections of 2.5" hose. Each member of the crew will have a section, along with a nozzle. The couplings are protected during the carry and the packs can be quickly connected in a stairwell or landing. This achieved by placing the packs side-by-side by their opposing couplings. Then connecting couplings while the end coupling in the series is hooked up to the stand-pipe riser.
The bundle pack is 100' of 1.75" or 2" hose. It is packed with the nozle in the center. The pack is essentially placed on the ground, pushed out from the center and charged. When charged it is virtually free of kinks and the nozzle will end-up on top for easy deployment and pay-out. This pack is great for deploying in tight landings/stairwells or as a secondary line off a leader line or an extension to the denver pack.
Both packs were found to very versatile and user friendly. Both packed quickly and easily deployed. In addition it was found that they could be integrated well during operations.
