Pipeline Emergencies 2 Curriculum Author Wins Coveted John M.
Eversole Lifetime Achievement Award at Conference in Baltimore
As the National Association of State Fire Marshals (NASFM) prepared to
unveil the brand new Pipeline Emergencies Second Edition (PE2) training
curriculum at the International Association of Fire Chiefs (IAFC) Hazardous
Materials Response Teams Conference in Baltimore on May 20, 2011, coauthor
and program developer, Gregory G. Noll, was honored with the John
M. Eversole Lifetime Achievement Award.
Washington, DC; May 23, 2011 -- The National Association of State Fire Marshals
(NASFM) is pleased to announce that Gregory G. Noll, a longtime NASFM partner on
the Pipeline Emergencies training program, was honored with the John M. Eversole
Lifetime Achievement Award by the IAFC Hazardous Materials Committee at the
International Hazardous Materials Response Conference in Baltimore, MD, on Friday,
May 20, 2011 at the Opening Ceremony.
Committee Chair Robert W. Royall, Jr., Assistant Chief of the Harris County (TX) Fire
Marshals’ Office awarded a speechless Noll the highest honor bestowed at the
conference. Established in 2007, the John M. Eversole Lifetime Achievement Award
recognizes a living individual who has had an exceptionally distinguished career in the
field of hazardous materials emergency response. It is presented annually to a
distinguished leader who has, throughout his career, made outstanding contributions to
further and enhance the hazardous materials emergency response profession.
Nominees are only considered if they are held in high esteem by their colleagues and
peers, recognized for their example in upholding professional standards, mentored
other professionals, and contributed to day-to-day excellence within the hazardous
materials emergency response community.
Surrounded by his family, Noll admitted that while he is not often at a loss for words, he
could only muster a tearful “thanks” to the audience of more than 1000 hazardous
materials trainers, responders, and technical specialists. Noll, a third generation
firefighter, has dedicated his adult life to public service and safety. “I want to be a
firefighter,” Noll wrote in a 1972 letter to his father. Chief Royall read a portion of Noll’s
letter when he introduced him to one of the largest gatherings of HazMat responders on
the east coast.
Noll, and his business partner, Michael S. Hildebrand, are co-authors of many books
including the new Pipeline Emergencies Second Edition (PE2) training curriculum that
was released at the HazMat Conference. This updated program is Internet-based and
the most innovative and comprehensive curriculum of its kind for first responders and
pipeline industry safety personnel. The e-Book format incorporates videos and
interactive graphics with simulations and textbook learning to provide a broad
representation of pipeline operations and tactical response options. Inside the second
edition is a complete curriculum including a textbook, DVD, training tools, presentation
slides, and facilitator’s guide. All pieces are available online at no charge and can be
completely customized to adapt to any training situation. PE2 is also available as
iPhone and iPad applications.
PE 2 is the direct result of a cooperative partnership that brought together pipeline
owners and operators, federal, state, and local regulators, trade associations, elected
officials, and emergency responders. The dynamic group, headed by Noll and
Hildebrand, and in cooperation with NASFM, created PE2 to improve the safety of our
country's first responders and the security of America’s pipeline infrastructure. The
updated curriculum covers both liquid and natural gas pipelines, and a range of
emergencies including leaks, spills and fires. This curriculum can also be used by
pipeline industry operators to fulfill federal guidelines requiring outreach and training of
first responders in specific distribution areas.
