On Monday, November 2nd 6 members of the Eden Fire Company traveled to the Lancaster County Public Safety Training Center for a public education event that involved 65 5th graders. The field trip was planned to complement the student’s knowledge about fire safety by showing them what firefighters do under live fire conditions. Students also learned how vital teamwork and good communications is when working to control a scene that can easily spiral out of control.

Car Fire Simulator
To begin the event, the students watched as four members donned their personal protective equipment and advanced two hand lines to extinguish the fully involved car fire prop. Once that was completed the next evolution demonstrated the cooling of the propane tank fire prop and the advancement of both lines to isolate and shut-off the valve supplying the tank. Students then moved to the burn build where they watched through the open garage door as the members of Eden extinguished the loading dock fire and completed a primary search and victim removal. Following that demonstration the members then utilized Truck 24 by placing the main aerial to the roof of the drill tower, throwing a ground ladder to the 3rd floor and clearing a window, and cutting a hole in the roof simulator. To finish the field trip a high angle rescue scenario was completed where one member was lowered from the top floor of the drill tower to a stranded window washer where a pick-off was performed and both members were lowered to the ground.

Crews make entry
Throughout the field trip students asked questions about the fire service, types of calls that firefighters respond to, and what if situations. These questions enhanced their experience by making the trip interactive. At the conclusion of the last activity the teachers quizzed the students on what they learned and thanked the members of Eden for organizing the trip and participating to make a memorable educational experience for the students.

Eden would like to extend our gratitude to Director Craig Elmer and his staff at the Training Center for allowing and supporting this event and Sergeant Bender, Firefighter Adams, Firefighter Breen, Firefighter Chenworth, Firefighter Mowry, and Firefighter Yakich for participating and doing an outstanding job for the students. This field trip gave the students a unique look at the fire service that few get the opportunity to see and a memorable experience that they will remember throughout their educational career.
